HSW members unite at their next Quarterly Members Meeting: driving diversity in the hydrogen sector.

Hydrogen South West (HSW) brought together members for the cluster’s Quarterly Members Meeting in Bristol on Tuesday (25 June).

The meeting, hosted by Womble Bond Dickinson, focused on the importance of increasing diversity across the hydrogen industry, at a time when the UK is looking to become a global leader in the field, evidenced by the recent government backing of 11 hydrogen projects across the UK.

There were presentations from the University of Plymouth, Hydrogen Innovation Initiative (HII), easyJet, The Seven Carbon Capture and Shipping Hub (7C02), all of whom also took part in a Question and Answer session on their influential journeys within in the industry, the opportunities available to unlock hydrogen pathways and discussions around what more can be done to ensure representation across the sector.

There were further presentations from  members including Wild Hydrogen, a Gloucestershire-based company who uses patented technology to convert biogenic materials into clear hydrogen, and Ooort Energy, innovators in making electrolysis economical and sustainable. In collaboration with communications specialists Copper Consultancy, Hydrogen South West also presented initial findings from its research into the experiences of women in the sector, with the ambition of amplifying female voices and driving meaningful change.

Copper Consultancy presented the findings of the initial research that seeks to ensure better diversity across the hydrogen sector, champion underrepresented voices and drive change.

This session fostered important dialogue, with key themes emerging such as spotlighting the various career paths that can bring people to the hydrogen sector. As well as recognising the significance of why people go into a career in hydrogen and offering a platform for underrepresented groups.

These findings will be built on and ultimately fed through to a report to be published later this year.

David Eccles CBE, Director of Hydrogen South West shared his thoughts on the successful meet:

“I was delighted to see many members come together to discuss some key challenges our hydrogen sector faces, whilst also celebrating the excellent work women and other underrepresented groups do within this exciting and growing industry.

The dialogue and next steps discussed mark the beginning of an exciting journey for the report that Hydrogen South West, alongside Copper Consultancy is putting into action as we strive to ensure diversity across the sector and drive real change.

Hydrogen is a new and exciting industry and it’s necessary we continue to share our diverse perspectives and offer our insight during these networking sessions to get everyone involved in this field and achieve a better balance as we move forward.”

HSW’s next quarterly meeting will be held at the end of September, with a central focus on Maritime & Land Transport.

By joining Hydrogen South West, organisations can forge connections with a broad spectrum of businesses and supporting partners. Membership provides exclusive access to valuable insights on industry-related policies and guidance, active participation in cutting-edge projects, and exclusive involvement in sector events.
